MOEA unveils plan for Taiwan industry development

January 27, 2011

The Ministry of Economic Affairs unveiled a 10-year economic plan Jan. 26 that aims to develop Taiwan into a center for global innovation and Asia-Pacific operations hub.

“This program offers guidelines for central and local governments when formulating measures to boost agriculture, manufacturing and the service sectors,” MOEA Minister Shih Yen-shiang said.

Sharpening Taiwan’s competitiveness through industry restructuring is a key goal of the plan, Shih said. “This will be achieved by concentrating on eight areas, including promoting balanced regional development, encouraging public-private collaboration, improving environmental protection and bolstering innovation.”

The minister said the program will ensure government agencies also wear the hats of strategic planners and promoters, taking full responsibility for mapping out the future direction of industries under their care.

“For example, the Financial Supervisory Commission and National Communications Commission will serve as regulatory bodies and oversee the development of their industries,” Shih said.

According to the MOEA, the plan will be submitted to the Cabinet in February for approval and is expected to take effect shortly after. (JSM)
