A simulated Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Senior Officials’ Meeting aimed at enhancing university student understanding of regional trade issues and related operations kicked off July 19 in Taipei City.
The meeting, which gives students throughout the region an opportunity to experience the excitement of an APEC gathering up close and personal, was organized by Chinese Taipei Pacific Economic Cooperation Committee under Taiwan Institute of Economic Research.
“We believe that the event will help spur student interest in the Asia-Pacific economy and world affairs,” said Hsiao Kuang-wei, a section chief with the ROC Ministry of Foreign Affairs Department of International Organizations. “Issues discussed track those prioritized in APEC meetings of that year.”
Topics for discussion at the 2013 APEC meetings in Indonesia include achieving sustainable growth with equity, maintaining momentum for trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, as well as promoting connectivity. The theme of the event is Resilient Asia-Pacific, Engine of Global Growth.
According to the MOFA, APEC Secretariat Executive Director Alan Bollard is taking part in the simulation as a commentator during his July 18-21 trip to Taiwan.
While in country, Bollard will visit the Chinese Taipei APEC Study Center, Council for Economic Planning and Development, Ministry of Economic Affairs and MOFA to exchange opinions on trade issues in the Asia-Pacific region. (KML-JSM)
