Five firms were honored for energy, while seven were recognized for water. The former conserved 45.53 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, and the latter 970,000 tons of water from January 2012 to November 2014.
They include Advanced International Multitech Co. Ltd. in Pingtung County, Jih Lin Technology Co. Ltd. in Kaohsiung City and Lingsen Precision Industries Ltd. in Taichung City.
“In this world where resources are scarce and expensive, it is crucial for the government to help businesses economize in all areas of operations,” said Yang Po-keng, deputy director-general of the MOEA Export Processing Zone Administration, at the awards ceremony in Kaohsiung.
“We also wish to praise the companies for their success in utilizing our advice and support to make the planet a greener place.”
Under the program, the EPZA assisted 40 companies in six zones around Taiwan. This included technical support in setting up the ISO 50001 energy management system and guidance in recycling waste water.
The energy saved by the initiative equates to 22,000 tons of greenhouse gas, with water accounting for 193.6 tons. “Given Daan Forest Park in Taipei City absorbs 389 tons of carbon dioxide per year, this result is the equivalent of 57 parks,” Yang said.
“We are extremely encouraged to see local exporters making such impressive headway on the environmental front and look forward to staging further public-private sector environmental collaborations going forward.” (DF-JSM)
