A biking route surrounding Sun Moon Lake in central Taiwan’s Nantou County has been chosen as one of the world’s top 10 cycling paths by CNNGo, an online travel guide affiliated with U.S.-based Cable News Network.
“Sun Moon Lake is an indicator of tourism in Taiwan, with landscapes, sites, cherry blossoms and fireflies, attracting tens and thousands of visitors every year,” an official with Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Administration said March 19.
“Being named by a prestigious international website can further help enhance the nation’s visibility in the world. We hope American and European cyclists can come and enjoy the beauty of Taiwan.”
In its introduction to Sun Moon Lake, CNNGo noted that “the route around the largest lake in Taiwan is a three-hour ride, where visitors can enjoy lake scenery, experience Thao aboriginal culture and learn about the local ecology in Nantou County. If you arrive in early spring, you can even catch the cherry blossoms near this mirror-like lake.”
CNNGo added that the lake, with its “calm, turquoise water has inspired many ancient Chinese poets and painters, and has long been charming curious foreigners and visitors alike.”
Situated at an elevation of 750 meters, Sun Moon Lake was given the name because “the eastern part of it is round like the sun and the western side is shaped like a crescent moon,” according to the administration. (HZW)
