Taiwan’s semiconductor output is forecast to hit a record high in 2022 on the back of booming demand for high performance computing and automotive electronics, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs Oct. 5.
Such growth is attributed to increasing remote business opportunities due to the pandemic and digital transformation as well as the expansion of emerging application technologies, the MOEA said.
The latest MOEA statistics reveal that the output value of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry totaled NT$2.8 trillion (US$89.9 billion) in 2021, which is the highest annual value to date.
According to the MOEA, the number grew 32.2 percent year on year to NT$2 trillion (US$64.7 billion) during January and July, 2022. Foundry was the primary source of growth, accounting for 68.2 percent of the total, while IC packaging and testing accounted for 19.1 percent and DRAM chips accounted for 5.5 percent, the ministry said.
Taiwan is the second largest IC exporter after Hong Kong, which is a re-export hub, the MOEA said, adding that after the country’s IC exports to China and Hong Kong exceeded 30 percent of the total in 2019, the number jumped to 37.6 percent from January to August 2022.
Going forward, the MOEA projects a rosy outlook for Taiwan’s semiconductor industry on the strength of the rising need for its high-end chips in emerging technologies. (DL-E)
