President Tsai Ing-wen said June 19 that Taiwan is committed to strengthening partnership with Poland across the board.
Tsai made the remarks while meeting with Barbara Bartus and her delegation at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. Bartus is deputy chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee under the Sejm, Poland’s lower house of parliament.
Taiwan and Poland have initiated projects in areas spanning economic affairs, education and technology, Tsai said. The Central European country’s donation of 400,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses to Taiwan is deeply appreciated by the government and people, she added.
Poland is a staunch supporter of Taiwan’s international participation, Tsai said, citing a resolution backing the country’s engagement in the World Health Organization passed by the Polish Senate’s Foreign and European Union Affairs Committee and Health Committee last July, a statement expressing similar sentiments released by 93 members of the cross-party Polish-Taiwanese Parliamentarian Group in April and the remarks made by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in support of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait the same month.
The two like-minded partners have also worked together to address authoritarian expansion and assist Ukrainian refugees in Poland, Tsai said. Taiwan will continue cooperating with Poland and neighboring countries to help Ukraine with recovery and reconstruction efforts, she added.
In response, Bartus said Taiwan is an important partner and the two sides enjoy good relations. Poland has tremendous economic potential and is interested in deepening cooperation in the semiconductor field, including joint research and development, technology transfers and personnel and training exchanges, she added.
According to Bartus, the future establishment of direct flights between the two countries will further advance their relationship, adding that she looks forward to expanding Taiwan-Poland collaboration in agriculture, education and hydrogen energy. (YCH-E)
