Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung received Guatemala’s Deputy Foreign Minister Julio Eduardo Orozco Pérez Aug. 5 in Taipei City to discuss key trade issues and exchange views on future expansion of the bilateral relationship.

According to Lin, the government is mapping out plans to enhance mutually beneficial cooperation with the Central American country in ways that coordinate with the policy platform of its president, Bernardo Arévalo. These include promoting investment from Taiwan’s textile and circular economy sectors in Guatemala, introducing smart technologies to improve its agricultural environment and establishing carbon sink trading between the two sides, he said.

The minister also thanked the government of Guatemala for its unwavering support for Taiwan’s global participation, citing the World Health Assembly as a specific example.

In response, Orozco expressed his country’s commitment to the two-way ties and thanked Lin for his efforts in May this year to help Guatemala counteract China’s economic coercion. He added that his government hopes that the two countries will continue to deepen their partnership through trade exchanges and talent cultivation initiatives.

Later the same day Orozco attended a luncheon hosted by Vice Foreign Minister Remus Li-kuo Chen. Chen expressed his wishes that Taiwan and Guatemala maintain cultural exchanges and joint efforts to restore historic sites, while Orozco thanked the government of Taiwan for promoting agricultural products from his country at Food Taipei.

According to the MOFA, this is Orozco’s first visit to Taiwan in his current capacity. Other highlights of his itinerary include calls on the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Taiwan’s International Cooperation and Development Fund, as well as participation in the 2024 SDG Asia, which kicks off Aug. 8.
