President Lai conveys condolences on Doris Brougham’s death

President Lai Ching-te expressed his condolences on the death of Doris Brougham, founder of Studio Classroom, who passed away at the age of 98 Aug. 6 in Taipei City. 

In a Facebook message, Lai recognized Brougham’s active participation in the 2030 bilingual nation policy. Minister of Culture Li Yuan noted that Brougham had dedicated her whole life to a place and a mission that she deeply loved, as he paid homage to her long-standing promotion of English language.

Brougham was born in Seattle in 1926, traveled to Hualien as a missionary in 1951 and founded Overseas Radio & Television, Inc. in 1960. She established Studio Classroom in 1962, which produced language learning magazines such as “Let’s Talk in English,” and “Studio Classroom.”

The MOC said that Brougham integrated publishing, radio, television, Internet, and multimedia channels to help students expand their international horizons. It added that her championing of the English language has benefited several generations of students in both urban and remote areas and broadened Taiwan’s cultural horizons.

In 2002, Brougham was presented with the Order of Brilliant Star with Violet Grand Cordon by the Presidential Office and was formally naturalized as a Taiwanese June 23, 2023. (POC-E)
