The ROC government is highly concerned by the inclusion of the Diaoyutai Islands in mainland China’s new East China Sea air defense identification zone, according to the National Security Council Nov. 23.

“We assert sovereignty over the Diaoyutai Islands and such a stance will not change despite mainland China’s announcement,” the NSC said in a statement. “The government is rock solid on safeguarding Diaoyutais sovereignty, protecting ROC fishermen’s rights and conducting related fisheries patrols.”

The statement follows an NSC meeting earlier the same day on response measures to mainland China’s move. The meeting was attended by ministers and officials from the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Interior and National Defense, as well as the Mainland Affairs Council.

The NSC also reaffirms the value of the East China Sea peace initiative proposed by President Ma Ying-jeou last August as a guideline for resolving regional disputes.

The five-point initiative urges all parties to refrain from antagonistic actions; not abandon dialogue; observe international law; resolve disputes through peaceful means; and form a mechanism for exploring and developing resources on a cooperative basis.

Concerning the overlap in Taipei and Beijing’s designated air defense zones, the NSC said the armed forces will take appropriate measures to ensure security in the nation’s territorial air space as per the initiative’s principle of peaceful resolution.

“The government is paying close attention to developments following mainland China’s announcement, and will maintain close communication and contact with all parties to ensure regional peace and stability.” (RC-JSM)
