Traditional arts group Taipei Folk Dance Theatre will depart Nov. 6 on a 15-day performance tour of ROC diplomatic allies El Salvador, Honduras and Panama, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“We have developed close bilateral relations and mutual understanding across a wide spectrum of areas with these three Central American countries,” MOFA Vice Minister Vanessa Shih said Oct. 29.

“The cultural trip reaffirms these strong friendships and is a key plank in the government’s viable diplomacy approach. It also illustrates our commitment to strengthening the nation’s international standing.”

Shih made the remarks at the launch ceremony in Taipei City for the upcoming tour. Also attending were ambassadors to the ROC of El Salvador, Nicaragua and Paraguay, as well as charges d’affaires of Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras and Panama.

Since President Ma Ying-jeou took office in May 2008, the vice minister said, he has paid five visits to the nation’s diplomatic allies in the region and bolstered two-way ties. “These have also reached new heights on the strength of various cooperation projects and people-to-people exchanges.”

According to Shih, the tour offers another special opportunity for people in the region to gain a better understanding of the beauty and richness of Taiwan’s traditional cultures. “Comprising six classic dances, the lineup features something for everyone and is certain to please,” she said.

“The MOFA is working to highlight Taiwan’s soft power and the creativity and talent of local arts groups,” Shih said, citing ministry-backed undertakings like Team-Win Lion Dance Theatre’s August trip to Northern Europe and the International Youth Ambassador Exchange Program.

“Taiwan’s abundance of culture is an essential feature of the nation’s heritage,” Shih said. “We will continue promoting this asset and boosting the nation’s international profile.”

Established in 1988, Taipei Folk Dance Theatre has performed in top-flight venues spanning 40-plus nations. These include Artscape Theatre Centre in South Africa and Lincoln Center in the U.S. (DF-JSM)
