A prototype for a quick-assembly, recyclable emergency quarantine and medical shelter suitable for use during the COVID-19 pandemic was unveiled April 28 at National Cheng Kung University in southern Taiwan’s Tainan City.

The Quarantine Unit for Recovery, Emergency and Ecology (QurE) was jointly developed by NCKU and Taipei City-based Bio-architecture Formosana. Its design is now available for public download.

At a press conference marking the event, NCKU President Jenny Su said the collaboration shows how academia and the private sector can work together for the greater good during these extraordinary times.

It further underscores how Taiwan Can Help combat coronavirus and fulfill the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals by offering technological solutions to global health issues, she added.

Featuring a modular assembly design, the unit can be constructed in three days and is suitable for a variety of terrains and conditions, according to BAF.

With airtight panels, metal aggregates and thermal insulation, QurE can serve as a negative pressure isolation ward, the firm said, adding the design also allows multiple individual units to be combined according to requirements.

The prototype can be viewed on NCKU’s campus until May 11. (SFC-E)
