An aerial film of Miaoli commissioned by the local government is unlocking the beauty of the western Taiwan county and helping promote the nation’s tourism profile abroad.

Recently shot by husband-and-wife team Hsu Ting-chang and Chen Tzu-yu from Yuanli Township, the documentary showcases the visual delights of such attractions as Miaoli Cultural Park, Nan-Chung Saisiyat Museum and Tongxiao Seawater Aquaculture Zone.

“Looking at local scenery from above gives you a different appreciation of Taiwan’s varied landscape,” Hsu said. “What we try to capture through filming is not just impressive vistas but the beauty of life.”

The duo, who founded their own production outfit Take New Taiwan Fly this year, have produced many bird’s-eye films of scenic spots such as Hehuan Mountain and Kenting in central and southern Taiwan.

According to Hsu, his passion for aerial photography took hold in 2010 when he began shooting films with a remotely piloted multicopter. At first, Chen was not thrilled with his new hobby, but soon changed her opinion after joining him on a trip to film tung blossoms in Miaoli’s Sanyi Township.

“I was awestruck by the scenery and soon became more passionate about aerial photography than Hsu,” she said.

Looking ahead, the couple said they are working to improve their photography skills and aim to produce a heartwarming piece highlighting the stunning scenery of Taiwan. (DF-JSM)
