Visual artist Chou Yu-cheng will share his unique brand of Taiwan-infused creativity with the world during the July 14 to Oct. 28 Liverpool Biennial, according to the Ministry of Culture.

The sole ethnic Chinese talent featuring in the 10th edition of the event, Chou is to be joined by 39 artists from 21 countries and territories in presenting pieces reflecting economic, political and social turmoil within the context of the British maritime mercantile city.

According to organizers, Chou “follows a practice that builds, across multiple materials, a subtle critique of mass media, institutions and the mechanisms that produce them,” adding that he expresses his intentions by emphasizing the procedures and operations behind his creations.

Born in Taipei City, the 42-year-old Chou regularly stages solo shows at home and abroad. Recent efforts include those at Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts in southern Taiwan and Taipei Fine Arts Museum, as well as Galerie ColletPark in Paris, France, and Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver, the U.S.

Chou is no stranger to critical acclaim, having won the Grand Prize of Taipei Art Award in 2012 and Taishin Annual Visual Art Award in 2011. In addition, he completed the Research Program La Seine at Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-arts de Paris in 2008.

The Liverpool Biennial takes place at galleries, museums, online and public spaces citywide. Since its launch in 1998, the event has grown in stature and is considered one of the most prestigious contemporary art shows in the world alongside Kassel Documenta in Germany, La Biennale di Venezi in Italy and Sao Paulo Art Biennial in Brazil.
