President Tsai Ing-wen said April 21 that her state visit to Swaziland in southern Africa was a success and serves as a model for future initiatives expanding Taiwan’s international space.

This trip underscores the enduring partnership between the two diplomatic allies, Tsai said. It also spotlights the value of front-line efforts by members of agriculture, education and medical missions in promoting Taiwan abroad, she added.

Tsai made the remarks at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport upon returning from a four-day visit for celebrations marking 50 years of bilateral relations, King Mswati III’s 50th birthday and 50 years of Swazi independence from Great Britain. It was her first trip to the continent since taking office in May 2016.

According to Tsai, one of the highlights of the visit was the signing of a joint communique pledging to promote exchanges and collaboration for the benefit of Taiwan and Swaziland. It is anticipated the pact will pave the way for an economic cooperation agreement between the nations going forward, she said.

Tsai also took the opportunity to express her sincere gratitude on behalf of the government and people for the king’s unwavering support of Taiwan’s bid to participate in international organizations.

The president said the trip showed her the need for Taiwan to play a bigger role in advancing development across Africa. As such, the National Security Council is tasked with drafting a plan coordinating local public and private sector measures boosting investment in and support for the continent, she added. (SFC-E)
