The statement made by Japan Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi June 16 highlighting the importance of cross-strait peace and stability is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Taiwan and Japan are like-minded partners with a shared belief in the universal values of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law, as well as maintaining close trade ties and frequent people-to-people exchanges, the MOFA said.

Taiwan is committed to further bolstering its cooperative relations with Japan, the ministry said, adding the government will continue to work with regional partners to protect Indo-Pacific peace, stability and prosperity.

In a tweet on the MOFA’s official Twitter account, Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu said: “Thank you, my dear friend @KishiNobuo. We'll keep working with other forces for good to ensure a peaceful & stable #Taiwan Strait, as well as a free & open #IndoPacific.”

Kishi made the remarks during the virtual Association of Southeast Asian Nations Defense Ministers Meeting-Plus.

The ADMM-Plus is a platform for the 10 ASEAN members and their eight dialogue partners—Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, South Korea and the U.S.—designed to strengthen security and defense cooperation. (DL-E)
