A donation ceremony for 10,000 pulse oximeters and 1,008 oxygen concentrators to Japan was staged by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sept. 17 in Taipei City, underscoring the government’s commitment to helping the East Asian country combat coronavirus.

Hosted by the Association of Taiwan-Japan Relations Association Chairperson Chiou I-jen, Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association Chief Rep. Hiroyasu Izumi and witnessed by Digital Minister Audrey Tang, the event highlighted the government and people’s deep appreciation for Japan’s five donations of COVID-19 vaccine doses.

Chiou and Tang said the total 3.9 million vaccines given by Japan to Taiwan are a generous gesture and further evidence of the virtuous circle defining exchanges between the two sides.

In response, Izumi said the pulse oximeters and oxygen concentrators will strengthen Japan’s response to the pandemic. It is expected the two countries will continue working together to overcome challenges posed by COVID-19, he added.

According to the MOFA, Taiwan and Japan share the universal values of freedom, democracy, respect for human rights and rule of law. As a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan is committed to strengthening its partnership with Japan while deepening cooperation with like-minded countries around the world in combating coronavirus, the ministry said.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “#Taiwan-#Japan ties are a virtuous circle. The handover of 10K pulse oximeters & 1K+ O2 concentrators at a ceremony featuring TJRA Chairperson Chiou, JTEA Rep. Izumi & @audreyt shows our deep appreciation for #RealFriend Japan’s donation of 3.9M #COVID19 vaccines. Thank you!” (YCH-E)
