A resolution on the future of EU-US relations, adopted by the European Parliament, is sincerely welcomed by the government and the people of Taiwan, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Oct. 7.

Passed a day earlier in a 550-83 vote, with 55 abstentions, the resolution highlights the need to explore areas of possible cooperation with the U.S. on China, particularly with regard to the protection of human and minority rights, the de-escalation of tensions in the South and East China Seas, Hong Kong and across the Taiwan Strait. It additionally urges the EU to bolster the role of its democratic friends and partners, including Australia, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Taiwan, in its Indo-Pacific Strategy, while enhancing coordination and partnership with the U.S. in the region.

Taiwan will not retreat in the face of intimidation and remains committed to safeguarding its democratic way of life through peaceful resolutions, the MOFA said, adding that the government will continue working with like-minded partners such as the EU and the U.S. to ensure peace, stability and prosperity throughout the Indo-Pacific region.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “Gratitude to @Europarl_En for adopting the resolution on the future of #EU-#US relations in which the need to cooperate closely on de-escalating tensions in the #Taiwan Strait is recognized, & our country's role as an #IndoPacific democratic friend & partner acknowledged.” (DL-E)
