The first-ever recipients of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Award for Outstanding Research in International Law were awarded by MOFA Deputy Minister Tien Chung-kwang during a ceremony Oct. 18 in Taipei City.

Both winners are well deserving of the inaugural honor, Tien said. They are urged to springboard off such success by joining the ranks of the ministry’s consular personnel serving on the front lines of Taiwan’s diplomatic efforts, he added.

In response, the pair thanked the MOFA for the scholarships and vowed to use the opportunity to deepen knowledge and understanding of associated fields while advancing related research.

According to the ministry, the recipients are graduate students in the Department of Diplomacy and College of Law at locally based National Chengchi University. They were selected from a first-class field following an exhaustive process in which applications and submissions of a report on public international law were scrutinized by an 11-member panel comprising three MOFA officials and eight experts.

In addition, applicants must be ROC (Taiwan) nationals, full-time tertiary education students and have received a score of 80 and above in public international law or international law of the sea, the MOFA said.

Organized by the ministry’s Department of Treaty and Legal Affairs, the scholarships seek to cultivate talents, enhance diplomatic efforts, and facilitate international exchanges and cooperation among academics, businesses and nongovernmental organizations. The initiative was unveiled in March 2020, with the recipients announced last month. (YCH-E)
