Premier Wu Den-yih at a Cabinet meeting April 29 instructed Minister without Portfolio Chang Chin-fu to set up an advisory taskforce to speed up the development of the cloud computing industry.
“All government agencies should work together and provide necessary budget and human resources to facilitate the development of the cloud computing industry,” Wu said. He made the directive after a briefing by the Ministry of Economic Affairs on a blueprint for the industry.
The taskforce will assist government branches in promoting related projects and help the private sector overcome technology and investment barriers.
According to the plan outlined by the MOEA, the government will spend NT$24 billion (US$763 million) in five years to attract 10 million users of cloud computing services and encourage enterprises to invest NT$12.7 billion on related research and development, as well as NT$100 billion on manufacturing and services. These commitments could create 50,000 job opportunities and accumulate industry output of NT$1 trillion.
“This plan will have a profound impact on the transformation of the country’s information communication technology hardware industry, enhancing added value,” the premier stated. “It will also affect innovation in the software service sector.”
The cloud computing industry could also contribute to the formation of an environment favoring energy saving and carbon emissions reductions.
Supply, demand and governance are the main strategies included in the MOEA’s blueprint. The supply policy will highlight the integration of cloud computing systems, data centers, application software, innovative products, broadband networks and testing mechanisms.
The demand policy will consist primarily of a government-cloud strategy to promote electronic administrative applications. In addition to the abovementioned advisory taskforce, a promotion office will be included in the governance policy to assist the private sector in participating in government projects. (HML-THN)
